A Week Later

"Yes, you can label the boxes based on where you packed them from. I know what's in every room, so I'll be able to kind of know what needs to be unpacked right away and what doesn't," Jasmine told the mover as we stood in the middle of her half-packed condo in the nation's capital.

The guy nodded his head and handed her clipboard to sign. She looked over at me nervously and then smiled, scribbling her signature on the bottom and handing it back to him. "Is there anything else that I need to do?"

The mover shook his head. "No ma'am. We're going to get started today, and we should be done within the next four days and have everything packed up and on the moving truck. We'll send you a text when the moving truck departs with the information about when your things will be delivered."

I loved seeing Jasmine excited about everything. When she called me a week earlier and told me that she was going to go for it, but asked for a longer engagement, I let myself be thrilled with the idea. Sure, there were moments that I was scared of becoming a father and a husband. They were moments that I had by myself, in my room late at night, thinking about my past and thinking about what had led my parents to give me up for adoption. Whatever their faults were, I feared that I would have the same ones when it came to raising our child. I didn't know what those were, though, as I didn't know anything about my parents. Finding them had been put on the back burner.

But I pushed those dark thoughts down because I already told Jasmine that I wanted her, and I wasn't forced into it. Yes, I felt a duty to do this, but at the same time, I wanted to as well. I knew that Jasmine and I would get to know each other in time, and just spending the last week with her in San Francisco gave me a sneak peek of what I had to look forward to. Our relationship was different. With everything moving so fast, we weren't really in a honeymoon period. There was no mushy stuff, no nervousness around each other. I wasn't even sure there would be any tension if the situation was just us dating without the pregnancy or the move. We just kind of clicked.

Jasmine turned to me as the mover walked away and grinned. "I really appreciate you paying for all this to happen. I'm not gonna lie, there was at least a fraction of a percentage weighing on my decision last week, based on the idea that I didn't want to come back here and pack everything."

Chuckling, I put my arm over her shoulder, and we walked out onto the stoop. "I don't blame you, I hate moving. Besides, this is stressful enough for you, and I want you to not have to deal with all of that.
